Indulging in luxury afternoon tea is one of the most popular cultural experiences in London – but is it worth the money?

Tea is ingrained in British culture, and hi-tea is an event that dates back almost as far back as the introduction of the drink to island itself. 

Over 150 years after the seventh Duchess of Bedford began serving a meal between lunch and dinner, the concept of afternoon tea has become a norm in England and many other parts of the world. What’s not to love about tasting warm beverages and delicious finger foods in cosy or elegant environments? 

Truthfully though, I never did care much for having an afternoon tea experience in London because it can be quite expensive (we don’t call it a luxury for no reason!). However, a few weeks ago, I came across a relatively affordable vegan tea option that intrigued me, and I figured, why not give it a shot and see what all the fuss is about.

The Story Of My Afternoon Tea Experience In At The Library, London

I made my way to the Marriot Hotel in Westminster and walked towards The Library, ready for delightful mother-daughter afternoon. The atmosphere was whimsical and inviting, but oh so posh. I was terrified I was going to spill food all over myself.

As I was escorted to my table; I found myself mesmerised by the incredible bookish surroundings and incredible views of the Westminster skyline. For a moment, I did not care about the food. Soon though, I was introduced to the 12-long tea list and in that moment it hit me – I was about to take part in a fascinating, age-old, English tradition. 

The steaming tea arrived in beautiful china, and a selection of finger sandwiches, scones and cake was placed in front of me by crisp white gloves. The savoury and sweet was all layered so perfectly, and the two hours just flew by in conversation, laughter, and fabulous food. 

All this topped with a glass of champagne, and I couldn’t be happier about how my first luxury afternoon tea in London turned out.

Is Afternoon Tea Worth The Price?

Some may ask, why would you spend £60 per person on such a thing? To them I say: while I am not denying it’s a high price, the fact that I walked away with a takeaway box shows just how much food is offered.

I am confident that a luxury afternoon tea experience is worth the money. Besides, there is nothing wrong with treating yourself and bringing a little luxe into your life through unique adventures once in a while.

However, if this still doesn’t convince you, there are still hundreds of more affordable afternoon tea spots in London that range between £20-£40 that can let you in on high society without the hefty price tag.
