The Ten Most Beautiful Cities In England

England always gets a bad rap. Yes, it rains a lot and there’s more to dislike besides the weather, but it is still one of my favourite places for travelling. If you lift the veil of grey skies, England is a sight to behold and is home to some of the most beautiful cities in the world. Amid intricate architecture posing thousands of years of history, acres of lush nature and a vibrancy that is unique to each place, it is easy to find something to adore and redefine a country that is more than what meets the eye.

Join me on a journey through ten unmissable cities to explore in England – but trust me, there is much more than what’s on this list.

When you think of a quintessentially English city that has not yet been overrun by modern developments, Bath is probably what comes to mind.

Beginning with the Romans right up to the Georgian era, Bath is blessed with a thriving cultural scene and holds onto its roots with a tight grip, making it a beloved destination for day trips and weekend getaways. With panoramic views from the top of the abbey tower, narrow streets filled with cute shops and of course, the iconic Roman baths that give this place its name, travellers can have it all in a pretty package.

The wonder of this city is in fact, so great, that it has been the backdrop to some of Jane Austen’s most celebrated novels!

Rich with historical charm and the scenic shores of the English Channel, Brighton boasts a tapestry of architectural marvels, cultural landmarks, and breathtaking vistas that leave a lasting impression on all who wander here.

Let the soothing rhythm of the waves and an atmosphere infused with the invigorating scent of saltwater carry you on an unexpected adventure of leisure and liveliness. Against the backdrop of the famous beach huts and between the narrow lanes, find bohemian charm and nostalgia marked by street art, music, and delicious cuisine – and revel in the juxtaposition of old and new, tradition and innovation.

Poet Matthew Arnold nicknamed Oxford the ‘City of Dreaming Spires’ due to the incredible architecture of the 38 colleges of the prestigious university in the city’s medieval centre. With such a description, it is no wonder why it’s one of the most famous and beautiful cities in England – and is absolutely bucket-list worthy.

Walking through the cobblestoned streets within the main city centre feels like you’re stepping back in time. As the world continues developing into glass and metal, forcing us to lose the charm of old brick structures and natural spaces, Oxford offers a glimpse into what we should preserve and the importance of appreciating artistry. Take advantage of the beautiful, historic architecture and vast natural environments the city has to offer before it is too late.

York is a stunning and typically English city that could hold up a mirror to other parts of the country but still dwells in individual character. Its dramatic stone walls encapsulate Viking-era heritage, Harry Potter themed stores reminisce in pop culture, and the majestic York Minster reflects the wonders of human creativity, all while also having the unique history of being home to the founding families of the British chocolate industry. As a result, York is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the north.

I’ve felt the pull to visit York for a few years, and after finally taking the trip, I can confirm that it is truly a buzzing hub that despite its small size, has so much to offer in the form of great contemporary elegance and antiquated charm. You could easily spend a day here and explore all the highlights, but spending a night is also worth your time and money so you can wander at your pace and have the beautiful narrow, cobblestone streets to yourself once the crowds of day trippers thin out at the end of the day.

Besides what’s not to love about a place known for sweet treats and its 365 pubs?
