Ten Adventures And Experiences In Kenya

At 5,199 meters, Mount Kenya is not only the highest peak in the country but is the second-highest peak in Africa and promises a challenging yet rewarding trek. The stunning landscapes, alpine meadows, and unique wildlife make this a must-visit destination for hikers and mountaineers – and as you reach the summit, spectacular views of the valley prove the marvellous beauty of our planet. Not to mention, this is the only place in Kenya where you have a shot at playing with snow!

When is the best time to climb Mt Kenya? The best times to take on any of the trekking routes are January to March and June to October – but you can technically hike year-round.

Despite hosting a collection of scenic waterfalls, Kenya is not famous for chasing waterfalls. However, within the lush Ngare Ndare Forest, the Ngare Ndare Waterfall, a.k.a. the Waterfall of the Gods, is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. The turquoise pools at the base of the waterfall, surrounded by luxurious greenery, create a picturesque setting and are worth a refreshing swim after the long journey you probably took to get here – but the best part is that this attraction is forgotten by tourists, making it an untouched beauty.

To enhance an already incredible adventure, don’t forget the canopy walk that swings over treetops and a series of mini waterfalls.

Kenya offers one of the most epic oceanic experiences in mainland Africa as the nation’s coastline along the Indian Ocean is a haven of vibrant coral reefs and features an abundance of marine life. The warm waters beckon divers and snorkelers alike to explore the underwater wonders and witness a diverse marine ecosystem that includes turtles, dolphins, and so much more. It is truly a mesmerizing experience.

Of course, if swimming is not your thing, the presence of a reef in this part of the world means you can walk out at low tide and marvel at other incredible sea creatures, such as starfish.

When is the best time for diving in Kenya? Anytime between October and February

Where are the best diving spots in Kenya? The most popular locations include Diani-Chale Marine Park, Watamu Marine Park, and Malindi Marine Park.

Also known as Hell’s Kitchen due to how hot the surface can get, the Marafa Depression is a geological phenomenon and an underrated destination situated in Malindi characterized by its rugged terrain and deep, eroded gorges. The vibrant colours of the sandstone formations create a surreal landscape and assures visitors plenty of opportunities to fall in love with picture-perfect settings as you wander the open paths and long trails.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is home to the last two female northern white rhinos and was until 2018, home to the last male northern white rhino. Northern white rhinos are now functionally extinct. This heart-breaking reality underscores the urgent need for increased conservation efforts worldwide, therefore visiting Ol Pejeta is perhaps one the best experiences in Kenya as you come face to face with the majestic creatures and can’t hide the fact that in just a century, we’ve managed to wipe out an entire species.

Mida Creek, a tidal inlet along Kenya’s coast, is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers. Sailing excursions around the creek provide the perfect opportunity to observe flamingos, herons, kingfishers, and more in tranquil waters and mangrove-lined shores as you seek out the serenity of the country’s untouched settings.

Over the past few years, taking an enchanting hot air balloon flight over Kenya’s many national parks has become one of the most epic experiences you can relish. There is magic in the adventure of soaring above the vast landscapes at sunrise and watching the world come alive from a unique vantage point. There is truly nothing like it.

Twice a year, millions of wildebeest, zebras, and other herbivores embark on the Great Migration between Kenya and Tanzania in search of greener pastures. The Maasai Mara National Park (and neighbouring Serengeti National Park) hosts this spectacular natural phenomenon, and witnessing this bucket list experience is a front-row seat to one of the most incredible wildlife spectacles on Earth.

When Does The Great Migration Take Place? The migration into Maasai Mara takes place around July, and the migration into Serengeti takes place around October each year.

For adrenaline junkies seeking an unexpected water adventure, white-water rafting on the Sagana River is a must. The river’s challenging rapids and stunning scenery provide an adrenaline-pumping experience – but whether you’re a seasoned rafter or a first-timer, you will receive an unforgettable ride.

Within the picturesque Kereita Forest, bordering the Aberdare mountain range, experience a rush of adrenaline as you ride the longest ziplines in East Africa. Glide under giant forest canopies and breathe the fresh air, all while gaining glimpses of nearby wildlife and even distant views of Mt. Kenya on a clear day.

Located only one hour from Nairobi, this is the perfect day trip activity for anyone looking to escape the city and delight in heart-pumping adventure.

Very nice suggestions for experiences in Kenya. I would very much to do all of these epic adventures, especially White-water rafting on the Sagana River! Tragically sad about the white Rhinos….

Hi Sanika! I heard that Kenya is expensive. Do you have a budget travel guide somewhere? I am planning to go but I am not sure how much to prepare. All I know that IT IS EXPENSIVE. How true is this? Thanks a lot!

Hey! You’re right, it’s not the most affordable destination – especially if you want to explore all the best bits. I would say to save at least $5000 excluding international flights for a 2 week break. I do not currently have a budget travel guide published, but I’ll be posting one in about 3 weeks. If you sign up to the newsletter you’ll be notified when its up😊 Feel free to DM me on insta if you have any questions though!
