Discovering Franschhoek: South Africa’s Romantic Wine Region

Franschhoek South Africa

Franschhoek describes itself as the valley of dreams. I would describe it as the valley of romance. As the ground blooms in shades of green for as far as the eye can see and the skies fill with orange hues at the end of the day, falling in love is expected. But however you look at it, the region is a captivating paradise exuding charm and beauty. Nestled in the heart of South Africa’s Western Cape, surrounded by majestic mountains and verdant vineyards, this picturesque town presents a symphony of old-world elegance and modern allure. The quaint streets are lined with historic Cape Dutch architecture and shaded by ancient oak trees, while the wineries boasting gourmet delights and celebrated wine estates blend harmoniously blend into the raw surroundings.

Although overshadowed by Stellenbosch because it’s further out from Cape Town, Franschhoek is a highlight for those who add it to their South African itineraries. Every corner whispers tales of history and beauty, beckoning exploration and indulgence.

Understanding The Wine Tram Routes In Franschhoek

There are 5 tram/bus routes available for exploring the wineries in Franschhoek. Each one visits a selection of wine estates showcasing a separate part of the Franschhoek Valley.

Your experience begins at either the Franschhoek Terminal or the Groot Drakenstein Terminal (depending on the line). From the terminals, you will be transported around your selected line’s loop of stops on a combination of the double-decker tram and open-air bus, allowing you to disembark whenever you like.

You can decide whether you want to ride the bus or tram first, but I think ending your adventures on the tram in always the best option.

I also recommend the pink line, but you can’t go wrong with whichever you choose.

Remember that pick up and drop off happen at certain times, and if you miss it, you will have to wait another 20-30 minutes for the tram or bus to come round again. You can find an example of the timetable here.

Don't waste precious adventure time, plan your travels with complete ease using my itineraries.
