Five Best Vegetarian Restaurants In Cape Town, South Africa

South African Cuisine

Cape Town is famed for its incredible landscapes and heart-pumping adventures, but what some do not know is that the city is the culinary capital of South Africa and a paradise for food enthusiasts, even for those with a penchant for vegetarian cuisine. With innovative twists on classic dishes and mouth-watering plant-based creations, the menus are diverse and delicious and cater to Cape Town’s evolving palate. Between the V&A and Kalk Bay you are guaranteed to find something to satisfy your taste buds, but here are five of my favourite vegetarian restaurants in Cape Town – from seaside eateries to trendy urban hotspots – to get you started on this cultural venture.

Vegetarian Restaurants In Cape Town

Karibu Restaurant lies along the V&A Waterfront and is one of the few places I found that offers vegetarian and vegan takes on traditional South African cuisine. So, if you love a gastronomic journey through local delicacies but often struggle because of your dietary requirements, head over here to celebrate a fusion of flavours and the beauty of tradition – all while enjoying scenic views!

Nestled in the charming coastal town of Kalk Bay (only 30 minutes from the city centre), Cape to Cuba offers a unique dining experience with its vibrant ambience and eclectic menu. While known for its Cuban-inspired dishes, the restaurant also caters to vegetarians with delectable options and refreshing drinks, and is the perfect place to grab lunch during your Cape Town to Cape Point road trip as well. Beyond its food, however, I fell in love with the restaurant for its views of the Kalk Harbour.

Location: Kalk Bay

Dishes Ordered: Nachos, Chili Poppers, Hibiscus and Cranberry Mojito

Life Grand Cafe, situated at the heart of the V&A Waterfront, combines chic elegance with culinary excellence. Their menu features a variety of vegetarian delights across various cuisines, making it one of the best vegetarian-friendly restaurants in Cape Town and perfect for groups. It also doesn’t hurt that whether you plan to visit for lunch or dinner, you will always find yourself in an entertaining setting.

For those craving Mexican aromas with a vegetarian twist, the homey El Burro in Greenpoint is the ultimate destination. Their menu boasts an array of inventive dishes, including the flavourful Artichoke and Cashew and mouth-watering Vegan Chilli Rellenos, and overall, is a lovely place to tuck away if you need a break from the hustle and bustle of Cape Town.

One thing to note is that even though this is one of my favourite vegetarian restaurants in Cape Town, in true tapas style, their portions are small.

Location: Greenpoint

Dishes Ordered: Artichoke and Cashew Cream Quesadillas, Spicy Bean Enchiladas, Vegan Chilli Rellenos, Crunchy Guacamole and Tortilla Chips

If you have ever wanted to experience South African pub culture, this is where to be. The chain of sports bars is found all over the city, but the best one to visit is in the affluent neighbourhood of Camps Bay, overlooking the picturesque promenade and glistening ocean. Known for its laid-back atmosphere and diverse menu, it is an ideal spot for vegetarians looking to enjoy the vibrant pulse of Cape Town’s culinary scene.

Location: Camps Bay

Dishes Ordered: Feta and Avo Salad, Halloumi Gyro, Fries and Vegetarian Sushi Platter
